Sixteen skippers just left France with no electronic navigation
The Golden Globe Race started today from Les Sables-d'Olonne: a solo, non-stop trip around the world using a sextant, a nautical almanac, and paper charts, the same tools sailors used in 1968. Each boat carries a sealed emergency GPS and satellite phone, but breaking that seal means retiring from the race.
This is the extreme version of the argument this whole site is built on. Sixteen people just set off to cross three oceans on the fundamentals alone, with the fallback locked in a box they hope never to open.
