Guylain Noël is Sail Canada's 2026 Instructor of the Year

Sail Canada closed out its National Coaches Week, September 14 to 20, by naming Guylain Noël its 2026 Instructor of the Year. I don't usually lead with an award, but this one is a direct hit on the thesis this whole site is built around, someone who knows standing next to someone who doesn't.
Noël has taught sailing for more than 35 years out of Lévis, Quebec, and holds Sail Canada's advanced instructor certification alongside a Transport Canada Captain's Certificate. He's logged more than 20,000 nautical miles. He's also Director of Training at Formation Nautique Québec, where he oversees roughly 40 instructors, which means the actual scale of what he's built isn't just his own teaching, it's every one of those 40 people's teaching too.
That's the award committee's own language. The award wasn't given for racing results or for a title. It was given for teaching skill, fairness, and communication, plus the concrete work of building a continuing-education curriculum for other instructors and launching an offshore racing program at his club. Noël is, in other words, a career example of the exact handoff this site exists to make more common: not a champion sailor who happens to teach, but someone whose whole career is the teaching itself.
